On Veterans Day, Americans thank and honour the men and women who serve and have served in the military. Veterans Day is observed on November 11th of each year and used to be called Armistice Day.
It’s an opportunity to teach children to thank those who have protected our freedoms and remind them of the sacrifices made by veterans and their families.
Children learn, through activities, discussions, and by listening to stories or watching DVDs, to respect the military and the brave men and women who are part of it.
Find Veterans Day activities such as bookmarks, vocabulary, marching fun, links for teachers and parents, and books. If you are Canadian, check out the Remembrance Day page…
Veterans Day Bookmarks
Inviting children to color a Veterans Day bookmark to color as you introduce the topic and ask them to tell you their experiences of Veterans Day is one way for them to gain understanding of the day and why we honor those who have served in the military. Photocopy enough sheets of bookmarks on to lightweight card for all students. Cut down the dotted lines, distribute to students for coloring.
As children color talk to them about the meaning of Veterans Day.

Quick Veterans Day Marching Fun
For a quick and easy Veterans Day activity, purchase red, white, and blue flagging tape. Cut into 2 foot lengths and tie about 6 lengths of all three colors together on one end. Give one to each student.
Play marching music and let children march and twirl their “ribbons”. Twirl high, low, make circles, twirl over heads, etc.
