Teach about limpets and barnacles as your students make them out of modeling clay. The limpet has a one-piece shell that is like a pointy hat. It is a relative of the snail and has one big foot that it uses to stick to rocks.
They move around at night grazing algae off of the rocks. The interesting thing about limpets is that they always go back to the same place after they finish eating. If you look closely on the rocks, you can see oval-shaped grooves created by the shells of limpets. A limpet has a head with two tentacles and a body part called a mantle.
Model a barnacle…
Barnacles have shells that overlap and they stick themselves to rocks, ships and even large fish and whales. When they need to eat they reach out into the water with feathery tentacles and catch plankton.
Place the barnacle and limpet models inside their tidepool craft.
