If you’re looking for DVDs to enhance your literacy program, animated picture book DVDs for kids are a great choice. They have a much slower pace and energy than many other DVDs, a benefit if you are trying to maintain a calm learning environment.
I don’t recommend using these as a substitute for reading classic picture books to children but they’re great if you have already read the books or if you need a short break!
Try reading and rereading 3 or 4 books by the same author. Provide opportunities for the children to notice and discuss the illustration style and other similarities in the book. The children are then very excited to see DVDs of the same books. Pause the DVDs at any time to build vocabulary and clarify concepts.
Scholastic has a number of picture book DVDs for kids that consist of sets of award-winning and classic children’s stories. I like them because…
- The DVDs are adapted and use a wide range of animation styles that match the original picture books.
- They are well narrated by celebrities such as Meryl Streep, Sarah Jessica Parker, John Lithgow, as well as other speakers.
- They make a nice end of the week treat for the children that reinforce the stories read that week.
- The illustrations show up clearly on a large screen and as a prompt for an art lesson.
